Welcome to Week 2 of the One Sorry Blog Sunday Scrabble Sweepstakes! Enter the Sunday Scrabble Sweepstakes every week and win. Playing is as easy as 1-2-3.
1. Check out the above snapshots of a board and rack from an actual Scrabble game, different each week.
2. Make the highest scoring word that you can.
3. Leave a Comment describing your move. (Be sure not to read other Comments until you’re ready to leave your own.)
Your score is the total number of points your word would earn in a regulation Scrabble game, plus a possible bonus of 10 style points if you play a word that One Sorry Blog has never heard of, or 5 for playing a word that goes through two letters, or 5 for an otherwise stylish move. An example of a word earning the 10 style-point bonus is OXTER, a word unknown to One Sorry Blog before Mary Nisbet of the Goleta foothills played it in the the precursor to the One Sorry Blog Sunday Scrabble Sweepstakes, the Scrabble Happy Hour at Elsie’s.
The contestant with the highest scoring word each week will be that week’s One Sorry Blog Sunday Scrabble Sweepstakes winner. The contestant with the most style points each week will be that week’s style winner. The contestant with the highest total score each month will be that month’s One Sorry Blog Sunday Scrabble Sweepstakes winner.
Winners will receive mad props a free subscription to One Sorry Blog by RSS feed or email. Good luck!

TRAINEES, hung off the last E in MOTHERED.
Not a big point score, but it is a bingo!
Thanks for finding me!

SIREN, with the E below the Y and the N below the TA. Hoping old English is acceptable. Ye’ know what I mean?

How about RETAINS or REMAINS, making MI, ON and TOILETS, which I make 78?

Nice style by Anna and Martin - Anna for making a bingo and Martin for making me look up words in the dictionary. Are we sure English is his SECOND language?? Jon Eccles - welcome to OSB! Darn you for stealing Remains which was mine too. I concede to all of you this week…

Since this is a blog, and bloggers are known for being snarky, my play would be SNARkIER, making the blank a K and ending in the R of MOTHERED. That’s a double-double, so it scores 7×4=28 points plus a 50 point bingo bonus for 78.
onesorryblog // 29 May 2007 at 12:10 am
I, too, was thinking double-double and found StRAINER, ending in the R in MOTHERED. Also worth 78, but likely losing to Jigsawn on style points. I’d say SNARKIER is worth 5 style points. Any opinions?
Jon Eccles // 29 May 2007 at 11:35 am
78 seems to be the best, doesn’t it? I think you’d have to give it to SNARKIER as well.

ERASING. The “S” tops “MOTHERED,” making it “SMOTHERED,” and the blank is a G.
ERASING (on a double-word, so it’s 12+50=62) plus SMOTHERED (13) is 75. No style points.
(P.S. I know it’s probably obvious to everyone else, but would it be possible to update the blog post to mention that the blank in “MOTHERE_” is a D? I had to peek at the comments.)

Nice one, JosyC, and thanks for the suggestion. In the future we won’t leave any blanks unexplained.

EARINGS - S is on top of SMOTHERED
I found this looking in my dictionary to see if “earring” could be spelled with one “R.” If you want to know its meaning - look it up. 25 + 50 = 75

Sunday Scrabble Sweepstakes Week 2 Results:
Winner: Scrabble Granny - EARINgS, placing the S over MOTHEREd - 75 points plus 10 style points for playing a word One Sorry Blog has never heard of. Total 85 points. Apparently, an earing is a line on a ship. Did anyone know this word?
2nd: Jigsawn - SNARkIER, where the second R is the R in MOTHEREd - 78 points plus 5 style points for relevance.
3rd (tie): Jon Eccles - REtAINS, making MI, ON AND TOILETS and Paul - StRAINER, where the second R is the R in MOTHEREd - 78 points.
5th: JosyC - ERASINg, placing the S over MOTHEREd - 75 points.
OK, congratulations to Scrabble Granny, whose stylish final-day submission made her this week’s winner. We had a good suggestion from JosyC to clarify all blanks. Clarita also would have scored 78, but conceded. Since this is was a short month, I propose we add these two weeks onto June and declare the first monthly winner at the end of June. Thanks to all for playing and tell your friends and loved ones to play the Sunday Scrabble Sweepstakes on One Sorry Blog. Week 3 will be posted shortly.
